Thick stone walls and floors help keep the house cool, whilst comfortable furnishings, classic antiques and bright wall hangings create a warm and welcoming space right in the heart of Maussane les Alpilles. The village has a good selection of shops and restaurants. St Remy-de-Provence, birthplace of Nostradamus is a lively town with the impressive Greco-Roman archaeological site of Glanum and the beautiful retreat where Van Gogh painted nearby. Arles is built around a Roman amphitheatre, once seating 20,000 spectators. Within easy reach are the wetlands of the Camargue, known for their pink flamingos, black fighting bulls and white horses, or the beautiful walled city of Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage site with the largest gothic palace in the world. Les Alpilles is a beautiful region perhaps best enjoyed by bicycle or horse back. |
