St Tropez itself offers upmarket shopping in tasteful boutiques, a choice of excellent restaurants and cafés, the  Musée de l'Annonciade with its renowned Post-Impressionist art collection, lively street markets and a quayside full of state-of-the-art yachts. The charming streets of the old town are a delight to wander around, and you are never far from a view of the stunningly blue Mediterranean sea. The fame and popularity enjoyed by St Tropez in recent decades might suggest that it is quite a sizeable town, but in fact many visitors are surprised that it is still essentially a small French fishing port, and this adds considerably to its appeal.

The Var region certainly deserves and repays a little exploration, but if you prefer a sports-based break you will be spoilt for choice here, with sailing, windsurfing, parascending, water-skiing, jetskis, diving, riding, hiking, tennis, golf and go-karting all available locally.
