Attractive sands and rocky beaches at Sables d’Olonne conceal the harbour-complex that will start the Vendée Globe yacht race in 2012. The region is known as the ‘Coast of Light’, enjoying as much sunshine as the Riviera.
To the north, the shellfish-and-samphire island of Noirmoutier is accessible by a three-mile tidal causeway. Offshore, the rugged Ile d’Yeu gives visitors a very real sense of escape.
