The beautiful south-eastern town of Cannes, located on the French Riviera, sits at the edge of the land looking out into the brilliant blue sea. Best known for its international film festival, the small town has a lot more to offer than first meets the eye. Looking like a paradise that has been taken from a dream, with a palm-lined promenade and gorgeous sandy beaches, the coastal resort is a truly idyllic location and would make a great setting for a couples getaway! In this article, we’ll be looking at the romantic activities you can get up to whilst spending time in the South of France.
Enjoy a Romantic Dinner & Drinks
No matter your budget, you’ll be able to enjoy a beautifully cooked and wonderfully romantic dinner in one of the many restaurants in Cannes. Maybe you could choose to dine at the reasonably priced La Table du Chef which will serve up fresh traditional French dishes in an authentic style restaurant. Or, if you’re looking for a finer dining experience, you could reserve a table at the sea fronting, double Michelin star holding La Palme d’Or. Chef Christian Sinicropi’s menu is something that can be sampled and enjoyed by all of the senses, with daring and inventive dishes that will leave you speechless.
In true French style, the meal is only the beginning of the evening, with plenty of small bars, lounges and clubs for you to visit and enjoy a drink at. For a truly stunning and unique experience, you’ll want to visit the 360 lounge bar atop the Radisson Blu Hotel and enjoy some post-dinner drinks with a bit of tapas.
Walk the Promenade de la Croisette
When thinking of Cannes, images of yachts moored by the coast, palms lining golden beaches and people walking along the stretching promenade may spring to mind. Well, the promenade in question is la Croisette and is an iconic feature of the coastal town. Following the arcing coastline, it is approximately two kilometres in length and is adorned with luxurious shops, restaurants, hotels and cafes. Walking along here during the day will give tremendous views out to sea, but the night is really when this stretch of coast comes alive. Lights, camera, action is what the town is known for and la Croisette certainly lives up to all three.
Visit Cannes Islands
Located just off the coast of Cannes are four small islands that can be visited during the day by boat. The largest of the four is Ile Saint-Marguerite which has a number of restaurants and points of interest. There is also several well-marked walking trails, with hidden coves, tidal pools and small beaches along the route. For wildlife, the best bet would be to head underwater by scuba diving or snorkelling and you’ll be rewarded with a plethora of species in all shapes and sizes!
Take a Trip to Le Cannet
Less than a mile away from Cannes is Le Cannet, a charming town set into the hills that overlook the coast. The old town is ripe for exploration, with a choice of either guided tours or your own discovery. You’ll likely encounter plenty of bistros and bars in the town with many being on offer in the Place Bellevue which offers visitors fantastic views of Cannes.
Take a Walk in the Esterel Massif
Also known as the Massif de l’Esterel, this large area of natural landscape features mountains, coves, walkways and everything in between. If you want to escape the bustle of the busy town then this is a great place to head to! You can choose to either walk or cycle along the various routes that line the area with both inland and coastal routes offering visitors the chance to soak up some gorgeous sights. We’d recommend checking the weather before you head out as there are some places with little shelter and few places to get supplies such as water so make sure you pack well and bring plenty of fluid. If you choose to make a day of it, why not pack up a picnic of cheese, bread and amazing French wine to truly have a romantic day away!
