Renowned for its iconic international film festival, the French resort of Cannes has much to offer all who visit. The jaw-dropping yachts that line the harbour, fine wine and dine establishments, upmarket boutiques, favourable weather and endless sandy havens have made it the destination of choice for many who prefer the finer things in life, as well as those who want to relax in the French Riviera. Cannes is one of the few towns in Europe that doesn’t have a plethora of galleries, museums and ancient churches to explore, meaning it provides the rare opportunity to really take in your immediate surroundings and appreciate the slow-paced lifestyle as it calmly takes place around you. Here at Quality Villas, we can’t get enough of this luxurious resort, and have decided to give you a taste of what you can get up to during a weekend of indulgence in Cannes.
You’ll probably fly into the Cote D’Azur airport, alongside fellow star-studded passengers, before taking the short but scenic car journey to Cannes. Settle into your villa and take a dip in the pool if you are lucky enough to have one in your abode. Depending on how early you get there, you may wish to familiarise yourself with the local area by taking a stroll into town and find a restaurant serving some fine French cuisine for a relaxed dinner on your first evening here. Head back for an early night ahead of the action-packed weekend ahead.
Live like a local and head to the local patisserie for your fix of pastries, croissants, bread and cheese, perhaps buying a little extra so that you can make a packed lunch. Once you have indulged, start your quest for culture in Cannes with a trip to the top of Suquet Hill where you’ll find what was once the land-based headquarters of the monks of Lérins. The museum that stands there today boasts a fascinating collection of ethnic art and artefacts from across the five continents. The trip is worth it for the exceptional view from the top tower, and after climbing the 109 steps to the top, no doubt you’ll be ready for a spot of lunch.
After enjoying your lunch and the outstanding views from there, head back into town to La Croisette promenade which curves around the bay and encompasses everything that you think of when Cannes first springs to mind. Join the joggers, rollerbladers and the rest of the beautiful people that holiday here and perhaps grab a cocktail at one of the many exquisite beachside bars. Wander through the maze of small roads that lead off the main promenade and check out the various independent boutiques and designer shops to get a couple of fantastic holiday buys. If shopping is not your thing, relax on the renowned golden sands of Cannes with your holiday read of choice and take in what is a truly unique atmosphere. Head back to your villa for a quick dip in the pool if it has one, or for a relaxing shower and to get ready for an evening out on the town. Treat yourself with one of the exceptional seafood restaurants and sample some of the fine French cuisine that is on offer, before a night of fine French wine, romantic bars and dancing the night away at any of the brilliant exclusive clubs.
You might be somewhat fuzzy-headed this morning, so treat yourself to a slightly later breakfast at one of the cafes on the atmospheric Square Mistral, where you can indulge on food and coffee alfresco while people-watching everyone else going about their daily business. Once you have eaten enough crepes, head straight to the Fort Royal on Ile Ste-Merguérite to discover the ineffective defence but admirable prison, that was most notably where the Man in The Iron Mask was kept captive. No one is quite sure who exactly he was, but regardless of the truth, the cell has been preserved, along with those of Protestant pastors that were imprisoned for their faith. Opt for lunch at one of the fantastic eateries on the island, making the most of your scenic surroundings. Head back to Cannes before catching the next boat toIle St-Honorat, the smaller of the two islands, where you can visit the fortified medieval monastery before finding a secluded, intimate cove to spend your afternoon relaxing on the beach. This will exude ‘desert-island’ vibes, and those travelling with a partner may feel like you’re the only two people on the planet, let alone the beach or island. Upon finishing your island-hopping adventures, head back to your villa via the supermarchè to pick up some fresh local ingredients to whip up a storm in the kitchen upon your return. Make the most of the various features of your villa be it a dip in the pool, relaxing on outside sofas or hammock or a soak in the hot tub with a bottle of bubbly. All of our villas are located in beautiful areas and many will have exceptional views, so eat your feast outside, taking in the sunset and finishing up any wine you may have opened throughout your stay. Some may choose to head back into town to continue the party whilst others, perhaps those with an early flight, will spend a relaxing night in the villa, hitting the hay at a reasonable hour so that they can feel fresh for returning home.
That concludes our guide to what spending the weekend in Cannes could look like, and there is plenty more to see and do during your time there if you are lucky enough to be getting away for slightly longer.
