avignon festival

Held this year from the 6th-24th July
in the popular medieval Provencal city of Avignon, the Avignon Festival returns
to bring the public almost a month of excellent cultural exhibitions and
performances.

Founded in 1947, over the decades the festival has helped to
establish itself as one of the leading events on France’s cultural calendar.
Out of the 40 or so shows that feature each year, many are created especially
for the Festival, or have their premiere at the Festival. Each evening of the
Festival promises at least one performance never seen anywhere else before. Alongside
the shows, visitors to the Festival will also be able to enjoy encounters with
the artists, exhibitions, film screenings, musical performances and readings of
original texts, giving the audience new insights into the shows featured.

The festival’s events will encompass the whole of the city,
taking place in more than twenty locations throughout Avignon. Many of these
are historical and open-air venues, adding to the spectacle of the shows, and
range from out on the street to the intimate, accommodating 50 people, and the
larger-scale, accommodating up to 2,000 people. In total the festival welcomes
around 150,000 visitors a year, who enjoy not only ticketed shows but some
events which are completely free of charge.

This year the festival is being directed by author, actor
and director Olivier Py, with the opening night headlined by Comédie
Française’s theatrical performance of The Damned, based on the film by Luchino
Visconti.

If you’re staying at one of our luxury French villas in
