Brittany in Western France, where you can find some of the fantastic luxury villas in France, has been ranked among the top most sustainable tourist destinations in the world.
The Sustainable Destinations Top 100 which celebrates the efforts of various destinations to run sustainable tourism initiatives, has only named one in France Brittany.
The region draws thousands of British holidaymakers every summer, thanks to the 2,700 kilometres of preserved coastline and was praised for embracing sustainability principles as development philosophy for the last 10 years.
The study which recognised Brittany as a sustainable tourist destination also noted the regions work to create a network of cycle paths which covers 1,000 kilometres.
The study noted, The Brittany region also implemented several coastal heritage and historic town preservation programs, together with two established regional parks and the first marine-based national park in France (Iroise Marine Park in Finistère).
Brittany is committed to improving the quality of water in its rivers and to develop renewable energy sources.
Other destinations have included the Grand Canyon, Bali, Northern Irelands County Down and the Kingdom of Bhutan. The nominated entries had to meet 15 points of criteria, from things like sustainability coordinator to cultural heritage conservation.
