Celebrate Christmas in cheerful and festive Avignon

12th November, 2015
During the weeks leading up to Christmas and the New Year, the Provence city of Avignon comes to life with Christmas cheer, offering a wonderful festive experience including the magnificent Christmas Market, a display of nativity scenes, parades, carolling and sparkling fairy lights.

In Provence, Christmas time traditionally lasts 40 days, finishing at Candlemas, with the big celebrations taking place on December 24. On Christmas Eve, families enjoy a ?big supper?, which ends with an incredible thirteen desserts, before attending the midnight mass. As the region?s capital, Avignon puts on some fantastic celebrations, which you too can join in with during your stay in our South of France villas. On the Place de l?Horloge, you?ll find all kinds of locally made products for sale to celebrate Christmas, including Christmas trees, regional food products, handmade gifts and much more, with the twinkling lights and the sound of carol singers only adding to the ambience.

No visit to Avignon at Christmas, however, is complete without a visit to the Chemin des Crèches, a pretty stroll through all the intricate animated and illuminated nativity scenes, complete with the famous and traditional santon figures handmade by local artisans ? these beautiful displays can also be found in shop windows all throughout Avignon.
