facts about pizza

Pizza is a solid staple for many countries. Regarded as a savoury treat, the pre-night out snack, the Friday night tea for the children, pizza is a beloved food across the globe. But do we know much about this delicious food? No? Well, let’s have a look at the facts!

Pizza Didn’t Originate from Italy

Contrary to popular belief, the idea of pizza did not originate from Italy as it is assumed. The broadest definition of pizza itself is a yeasted flatbread or round dough base that has ingredients baked on top of it. Fascinatingly, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that bread ovens existed over 14,000 years ago. The idea for flatbread and ‘toppings’ as a food concept initially came from the Greeks and was later redefined in Italy. Naples was founded as a Greek port city, with tomato being added in the late 18th century. This may explain a link between the Greek flatbread meal “Plankuntos” and what we now call Pizza.

A Pizza was Delivered in Space

Pizza hut and space might not be two words you automatically fit together, but this is a time where it can!

Pizza hut became the first restaurant chain in history to deliver pizza to the international space station, according to the BBC in 2001. The pizza was delivered on a resupply rocket and cost over one million dollars to execute.

Your senses are, in fact, dulled in space because of the effect gravity has on the fluid in the body. So, Pizza Hut made sure the space pizza was seasoned heavily with extra salt and herbs.

North Korea has a Pizzeria

You would be forgiven for not associating Kim Jong- Il with pizza immediately, but it was with his persistence and strong love of pizza that the first pizzeria in North Korea was approved and opened in 2009.

Kim Jong Il did not do things by halves when it came to this pizzeria. He has been said to have summoned Italian pizza chefs to Pyongyang to show army officers how to make pizza, and he also wouldn’t accept any less than the best.

Chefs were sent to Rome and Naples for further research and training, and all ingredients for the restaurant were sourced straight from Italy. Finally, the restaurant was deemed ready to open.
