The Festival de Carcassonne – one of France’s unmissable summer events

12th July, 2016
Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year is the month-long Festival de Carcassonne, which over the past decade has established itself as one of the leading summer festivals in France. Carcassonne is already a must-visit if you’re staying at one of our luxury French gites in the south of France, with the festival set to make your time there all the more enjoyable.

This year’s edition began on July 4, and will run all the way up to August 1, offering over a hundred events spanning a variety of entertainment including theatre, music, dance, opera and circus. As a bonus, several of these events are also completely free of charge.

What makes the Festival de Carcassonne stand out from the rest is not only its carefully selected programme but also the beautiful setting of the medieval buildings and walls which have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The events are held in several historic buildings across the city, including the ancient theatre, which will enchant an audience of up to 3000 people every night. In total, more than 200,000 people from all over France and beyond are welcomed to the city to enjoy the festival.

Over the years the Festival has brought many big names from the world of music to the city’s stage, including artists such as Bob Dylan, Diana Ross and Jose Carreras, with this year’s biggest concert set to be headlined by Pharrell Williams. Alongside the big names, the festival prides itself on showcasing emerging artists and a growing wealth of cultural diversity in its programme of performances.
