For many centuries, May Day holidays have been celebrated in
cities, towns and villages across Europe, and in many places are one of the
most important events on the annual calendar. The city of Nice on the French
Riviera is no exception, holding celebrations not only on May Day itself but
also on every Sunday throughout the month.
Nices Fête des Mai celebrations can be traced back as far
as the Roman times, and is steeped in tradition demonstrating the citys way of
life in times past. This year, the celebrations began on May 1, and take place
in the Gardens of Cimiez, a beautiful location to visit at any time of the year
but especially during these celebrations.
Across the month, the Gardens come to life with traditional
song and dance, including maypole dancing, accordion music, traditional
costumes and displays of colourful flowers. Smaller events from traditional
dancing to feasting also take place in several of the citys neighbourhoods, so
wherever youre staying in Nice, youre bound to be near some Fête des Mai
The event is also great for children, as theres a host of fun
childrens activities, from face painting to puppet shows and bouncy castles. The
party continues well into the night, with much of the evenings celebrations
consisting of concerts and dancing. Local food and drink is also served from
stalls throughout the day. Artists from all over the world are also invited to
submit artworks, which are first showcased at the festival and are exhibited in
the city all year round.
If youre staying at one of our Nice villas this month, why
not spend part of your weekend joining in with the traditional celebrations?
