Lake Como

The most picturesque of the lakes, Lake Como is dotted with majestic buildings on its waterfront, and swimming pools and gardens. Ferries cross the water, providing easy access to other lake shore villages such as Bellagio, a place which is often referred to as the most beautiful town in Italy. Hire bikes out to ride along the waterside promenade in towns like Como or visit Domaso where the whole family can try some windsurfing lessons, or hire canoes to take out on the water. There are so many attractions within easy driving distance of the lake and our luxury villas; spend a day at Jungle Raider Park, a mixture of woodland forest, theme park and adventure playground. The obstacle course through the trees is a great way to get active in the outdoors. On the beautiful sunny days, head to Bellano or Derivo where there are beaches and public pools where you can relax while the children take a dip.

Lake Garda

The largest of the lakes, Lake Garda is popular with families, especially those with older children and teenagers, boasting Roman ruins and medieval castles to explore which overlook the lake, and pebbled beaches with a few sandy coves, perfect locations for a picnic in the sun followed by a paddle in the shallows of the lake. Head to the northern end of the lake, Riva del Garda for a variety of water sports such as windsurfing, canoeing and sailing. And for those who want to stay dry there is horse-riding and mountain biking and many scenic hiking routes on the eastern and western shores. There is also theme parks near Lake Garda, Gardaland and Medieval Times where younger kids can enjoy the thrilling rides.

Lake Orta

Smaller than the others, Lake Orta is totally enchanting, surrounded by forests and rolling hills, it looks like it is straight out of a fairy tale. Youngsters will enjoy the boat ride which will take you to various villages along the shore and from the Piazza Motta pier San Giulio to the Isola San Giulio, the island within the lake. The village of San Giulio is very popular with visitors, and on hot sunny days who can sit the shady piazza while enjoying bucket loads of gelato. You can also take a lake tour, the Giro Lago, which consists of over 500km of trails you can traverse by either bike or foot, which take you on scenic circuits of the lake and offer stunning vistas of Orta. Something not to miss is the bobsled rollercoaster on Mottarone mountain. This attraction is great for older kids and teens, and adults shouldn’t miss out on travelling down the 750m mountain ride offering views of Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore.

Lake Maggiore

The second-largest of the Italian lakes in the north, Lake Maggiore is a great one for visiting the islands within the lakes, Isola Madre, Isola Bella and Isola Pescatori, with regular daily trips to each. Isola Bella is the largest and entirely occupie by the Borromean Palace with its tropical gardems, making it the perfect destination for a day trip with the family. Back on the lake shore, why not visit the Rocca di Angera, a medieval castle overlooking the lake which has a fairy tale tower, a doll museum and stunning views of the region.
