How long have you owned Villa Barek?
We have been going to Morocco for the last eight years and immediately fell in love with the country. We wanted to find a property of our own that could provide a beautiful, quiet oasis, yet close enough to the vibrant city of Marrakech which we have come to consider our second home. In January 2017, after much searching for our dream home, we bought Villa Barek.
What did you want to buy a property in Marrakech?
The climate is fabulous all year round, but it’s only three and a half hours from the UK! Although there is no time difference, from the moment you land in Marrakech airport you are transported to a different world; the sounds, the smells, the light and the people lift the spirit. The food is delicious, the architecture is beautiful, and the people are so kind and welcoming!
In three words, how would you best describe Villa Barek?
Beautiful, peaceful and majestic.
What made you choose to work with Quality Villas?
The attention to detail; the team at Quality Villas are so helpful and will always go the extra mile for their customers.
Which suitcase would you recommend people to travel when traveling to Morocco?
Sunscreen, a good book, a camera, local currency, swimming costume and a pair of trainers.
What is a mouth-watering Moroccan cuisine that you love?
Pastilla, which is a shredded chicken with cinnamon and almonds, all wrapped-up in pastry wire. It’s simply delicious and can often be found served at celebrations.
Where should every person visit Marrakech make sure they visit?
You can not go to Marrakech without visiting the souk – what an experience! Be prepared for a sensory overload. Located off the Jemma El Fna Place, this is a feast for your eyes and a shopping experience like no other. Colorful displays of goods and food for sale adorn every street, and you will certainly find something to bring back home. Favorite include ceramics, tea glasses, hand-woven baskets, wooden boxes, lanterns, slippers and beautiful kaftans and throws. Haggling is a must and does not buy the first thing you see; you will no doubt find the same thing further down the road.
I also love Al Ben Youssef Madersa who is the old Koranic school. It is one of the most dazzling examples of Moorish architecture in the world, reminiscent of the Alhambra in Granada and the Alcazar in Seville.
What is an interesting fact about you?
At the age of nine months old, I was shipwrecked with my family in Nigeria before being rescued by an African tribe and made an honorary member of their tribe.
If you could own a villa anywhere in the world, where would you pick and why?
