The Violet Festival, or ?Fête des Violettes?, has been a long-standing tradition in the town of
Tourrettes-sur-Loup, just a few miles from the world-famous French Riviera, and
will return to the town from 27-28 February 2016.
in 1950 to celebrate the specialities of Tourrettan soils, the violets quickly
became the highlight, with the festival held every February or March to
celebrate the end of violet season and welcome in the spring.
Even from early in the
morning on the Saturday, there is already a buzz in the air so it?s definitely
worth arriving early. There?s plenty to explore in this village even when the
festival?s not going on, such as the medieval buildings and the walls marking
the boundaries. Not only have the local producers, artists and craftsmen
already set up their stalls in the main square, but the houses and shops you
pass along the way are also decorated from top to bottom with colourful
mimosas, daffodils and, of course, violets. This is a time of year when the
entire town gets to together and participates, whether they are running a stall
or simply helping decorate.
Alongside the bowls
and pretty arrangements of fresh violets, you can also purchase other
violet-related specialties such as natural violet soap, violet syrup and
crystallised violets. If you?d like to learn more about how the violets are
grown, you can even take a tour of some of the local producers.
The square not
only brings together the local violet producers but also a number of food
stalls, where you can discover Provencal food at its best, from cured hams to
tasty cheeses, breads, wines, jams and nougat.
