Famous for its chateau, Talmont St-Hilaire, located in the Vendee region of western France, is a town with history. Visit the Chateau de Talmont, otherwise known as Richard The Lionheart’s castle, where he lived and hunted in the woods surrounding it. Although it’s in ruins, you can still explore its ancient walls, and experience medieval life by watching one of the medieval events that take place there during the summer. A walk around the lovely old streets of the town reveals sites such as the Church of St Pierre and the original town hall, which are worth a look, or just relax in one of the wonderful little restaurants dotted around. For all the family, there’s a large leisure lake with a great children’s play area in the shape of castles and boats, a number of shops and plenty of space to take a pleasant walk. And, right nearby is the modern Port Bourgenay – a perfect place to watch the boats while enjoying a refreshing drink, and Veillon Beach – one of Vendee’s best. ??
