Located in the popular Var region of southeastern France, is the Provencal town of Gonfaron. Just past the magnificent Maures mountains is a town that's well known for its tortoise rescue and breeding centre – the ‘village des tortues.’ Home to more than 1,500 tortoises, including endangered species, it’s an intriguing place to visit. But, there’s more to Gonfaron than tortoises. The town itself has a lovely large central square – Place de la Victoire – shaded by trees and surrounded by café terraces, and there’s a lovely market every Wednesday morning. Then, wandering around the streets, be on the lookout for fountains, of which there are many in the town and an appealing clock tower with an unusual wrought iron frame. Finally, every year there’s a celebration of the flying donkey. Yes, this certainly is a town full of quirks, as legend has it that this is the land where donkeys fly.
