L’Isle Sur La Sorgue is a must-see on the Provencal trail. This fabulous ‘island’ on the Sorgue River at the foot of the Vaucluse plateau is compact and perfect. Another town worthy of the name ‘The Venice of Provence,’ the river flows in and around the town, with little bridges to cross, mills to marvel at, and stunning, old waterwheels. Gondolas float up and down the narrow canals; you can even take a ride on one yourself. As you explore, you should find yourself at the imposing Notre-Dame-des-Anges church. Rebuilt in the 17th century, it has a Baroque interior and is surrounded by cafes, shops, and streets full of shops leading away from it and this is where you’ll find the social hub with a couple of galleries exhibiting great artists. Love searching for antiques? With 300 permanent antique dealers and second-hand shops established on the island, you will not be disappointed. Antique markets are held here often, and there’s a market every Thursday and Sunday morning.
