Just a five-minute walk from the hilltop village of Vauvert in southern Provence, this family villa with pool makes an ideal base to explore the Camargue's unique natural heritage; its magnificent wildlife and striking landscape crisscrossed by a system of canals with forests, extensive wetland and sand dunes.

This is an extremely spacious and comfortable holiday villa set on a hillside with far reaching views over the surrounding area as far as Nimes and, on a clear day, to the Mediterranean. Tastefully furnished with traditional French furniture and vintage objets d'art, Le Cheval Blanc features a large open plan living area opening onto a long terrace affording views over the rural surroundings. Set on a lower terrace, the enclosed pool is complemented by a sunbathing area and a lovely pool house with full summer kitchen and dining facilities; perfect for days spent outdoors in the warm Provencal sunshine.

Opportunities for day trips and outdoor activities in this area are countless. Straddling the Languedoc and Provence, Le Cheval Blanc is the ideal base to start discovering what these attractive regions have to offer. Just a few miles from this property is the Regional Natural Park of the Camargue, a fascinating combination of marshlands, ponds and canals inhabited by pink flamingos, white horses, bulls and many other protected species. Jeep tours and horse-riding excursions are highly recommended to enjoy the Camargue at its best. Should you wish to spend a day by the sea, the beautiful, long sandy beaches of L’Espiquette and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer are within half-an-hour drive and so is the picturesque 12th century walled town of Aigues Mortes famous for its antique fairs, shops and excellent restaurants.

People come here too for horse-riding, to go on jeep tours, bird-spotting, swimming, shopping, for the restaurants, the music, the horse market, mini-cruises, the paddy fields, melon farms, and so on. If you have absolutely no intention of getting into the saddle, there are safaris in 4x4, quad bikes and jeep, or you can take mini-cruises up the Petit Rhone on the Tikki III, or hire a bicycle. ”

  • We really enjoyed our stay.

Le Cheval Blanc is a lovely house situated in the centre of a small, untouristy but charming town. The house has been designed with great thought and attention - the sitting room is large and cool and the poolside summer kitchen is fabulous for poolside cooking while watching teenage children swimming. The housekeeper was friendly and helpful and did a large shop for us prior to arrival which was great. The Camargue area has so much to do and see with bulls, horses and flamingos everywhere. On the weekend of our arrival we watched the bulls running through the streets of Vauvert and during our stay there we went on a 4 wheel drive safari, recommended by the Vauvert tourism office. Aigues Mort's market is incredible - beautiful food. We really enjoyed our stay.

  • The villa is spacious and comfortable

The four of us enjoyed our stay at Le Cheval Blanc very much. The villa is spacious and comfortable and pretty well stocked mostly. My husband and I had to change bedrooms from the 1st floor double room to one of the twin bedrooms after a few days because the mattresses were uncomfortable. I did mention this to the housekeeper, who said she would bring it to the attention of the owner. We loved the pool and the outdoor kitchen ,which worked very well for our barbecues ,and was also well stocked. The position of the villa is perfect for touring the Camargue and surrounding cities. Vauvert is a very friendly town and we got on well with the locals.( The owner of L'Oustralet opened on a Monday evening especially for us as there was nowhere else open that day) We had asked before going about the number of restaurants available in Vauvert, and although there are six or seven, several of them were closed for annual holidays, and some only opened at lunchtime. However we still managed to eat out in Vauvert enough evenings, and had BBQ's the rest. Our only big problem was the drive where the electric gates were. There is a metal gate stop in the middle of the drive where the level also changes from the ascent and levels out in front of the garage. The underneath of both our cars ( a Jaguar and an Audi) couldn't clear the gate stop which caught the bottom of the Audi . In the end we parked our car in the lay-by at the bottom of the hill. Overall the villa met our expectations and the housekeeper was friendly and very helpful. QUALITY VILLAS NOTE: The owner has been notified and will change the mattresses and also address the access with regards to low slung cars.
