The journey to this medieval French village is as pleasurable as arriving. Scenic roads wind their way through forests of oak, chestnuts, and photogenic Mediterranean landscapes, finally leading to the lovely town of La Garde-Freinet. In the heart of the Massif des Maures mountains on the Cote díAzur, itís a lovely position. A town of two halves, there is a newer part with wide streets and modern dwellings, but the oldest part, centred around the 16th-century St Clement Church is what many come to see. Complete with old stone houses, narrow streets, ancient fountains and squares lined with restaurants, cafes and shops, itís a charming place to visit, and with two weekly markets on a Wednesday and Sunday, it really is a delight. Sitting on a narrow ledge overlooked by high rocky mountains, the views are quite stunning. From the old Fort Freinet, youíll see panoramas stretching all the way to the Alps.
