Thanks to its sheltered bay, St Jean de Luz in south west France is a popular beach resort. Just 20 minutes from Biarritz, the resort of Saint Jean de Luz is a lot more relaxed, and although beautiful, it’s fortunately not overcrowded. Boasting a crescent-shaped bay with fine sand, it is dotted with colourful marquees, children’s clubs, a thalassotherapy centre and enough facilities to make sunbathing an enjoyable experience. In the town, you’ll find large, beautiful Basque, timbered houses dating back to the 17th century when St Jean de Luz was one of the most important fishing ports in France. Here you’ll also find the Church of St John The Baptist, the largest and most famous of all Basque churches in France. Here King Louis XIV of France married the King of Spain’s daughter, Maria Theresa. It is an impressive sight. Finally, pay a visit to the old port for a lovely seafood supper and stop by Place Louis XIV – the main square – for a refreshing drink at one of the many café and restaurant terraces.
