Dordogne villa for rent - La Retraite is a delightful property, a former rectory standing beside the old church of Nadaillac de Rouge, where the bells still chime three times a day, although sadly not in July or August! Built of local stone in a typically Perigordian style, with flagstone floors, wooden beams and a large inglenook fireplace, La Retraite exudes comfort and relaxation whatever the time of year. A heated pool and air conditioning in two of the bedrooms adds that extra appeal. The tiny village boasts an auberge serving local cuisine, just a short walk from the villa, and you will find more restaurants as well as shops, supermarket, banks and post office in the local towns of Souillac, Peyrac and St Julien de Lampon.
You are very well-positioned here for all the delights of the Dordogne and Lot regions, and there is plenty to see and do. The Dordogne River is just a few miles from La Retraite: you can go canoeing, kayaking or fishing, or perhaps take a relaxing trip along the river on one of the traditional flat-bottomed boats (gabares), just soaking up the scenery. This area is also world famous for its many caves with ancient wall paintings and spectacular rock formations: an underwater boat ride through the ancient caves at nearby Gouffre de Padirac would make a memorable holiday experience for holidaymakers of all ages. Nearby Rocamadour, France' s second most visited tourist attraction after Le Mont St-Michel, is a culturally significant town, and quite a magical sight with its golden houses clinging to the side of a cliff over the Alzou canyon. There are numerous little towns to visit in this region: you probably won't want to miss the medieval town of Sarlat and its renowned market, and Domme and Martel are other possibilities. Activities such as hot air ballooning, riding and cycling are also available, as well as children's adventure parks.
La Retraite offers a welcome respite from the modern world. The villa has a very special, timeless quality about it. The dark night-time skies are just perfect for star-gazing, and with its rural, tranquil setting and proximity to a myriad of local attractions, this charming and welcoming Dordogne villa for rent is a real gem.

“ When I first saw this house in this lovely hamlet, I thought "I’d like to buy that house!" Ivy covered and with a pretty garden, it reminded me of a country cottage in England. It’s French through and through though; a delightful villa with lovely views. Very handy to have the auberge nearby for the occasional meal when you don't want to cook. Souillac is not far and is a great town for restaurants and shops. This is a part of the Dordogne that I really love. ”
A Little Piece of Heaven in the Dordogne
The owner invested a huge amount of care and attention in creating this little piece of heaven in the Dordogne. The beds were comfortable, the linens were crisp, towels were plentiful. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you would need, and there were even two sets of dishes, depending on whether you wanted a casual meal or an elegant evening. The wine glasses were high quality, and candles were provided for romantic dinners. The gorgeous beams and stone walls were highlighted by discreet artwork. The showers were good (especially the large one downstairs), and all of them were thoughtfully designed in stone. It was wonderful to sit in front of the massive fireplace in the sitting room with a glowing fire on some of the cool evenings. We enjoyed the pool, which was a good size and well cared for; swimming with a view of the house and church was a great joy. The garden was lovely and the exterior of the house was a photo-opportunity at every hour of the day. It was very relaxing to sit on the terrace with a glass of wine, grapes dangling overhead, geraniums in bloom and contemplate the beauty of this gorgeous area--the silence only broken by the soft tinkling of the water fountain near the pool. The local church and chateau were beautiful and we took some lovely walks in the area. My reason for booking was to be close to Peche Merle and Gouffre de Padirac (about an hour away and absolutely un-missable, especially Peche Merle). Sarlat is close, as is Collonges la Rouge, Rocamadour, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and La Roque Gageac--all well worth a visit. I can't say enough wonderful things about this incredible property. I came home thoroughly refreshed and rested, with some wonderful memories.
