Luxury villa near Barga - set in a twenty-five acre estate in the tranquil mountains outside the village of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, this is an immaculately presented property enjoying breathtaking views across the surrounding hills and mountains high in the Serchio River valley.
The villa itself has a homely Italian feel, with terracotta-tiled floors and beamed ceilings. French doors lead from the living room onto the terrace, which overlooks the stunning range of mountains known as the Alpi Apuane, and most notably the L'Uomo Morto peak; this mountain range provides the beautiful white marble used by architects and artists across Italy, including Michelangelo. There are large, sloping lawns around the property, ideal for children to run around. There is also an annex, if one or two of your party would like a little extra privacy. There are many small villages waiting to be discovered in the surrounding Garfagnana area, as well as the various local culinary delights such as excellent home-made cheeses and cold cuts: in the autumn the region is well known for its high-quality chestnuts. For day trips, the lively historical walled town of Lucca is a lovely 30 mile drive following the beautiful Serchio river and the beaches of the Versilia coast are less than 1 hour away. Local amenities and restaurants are just a short drive away, or you can follow one of the many hiking trails across the hills to reach a good local restaurant in about 40 mins on foot. The nearby town of Barga hosts a Jazz festival each August and artists come from all over the world to participate.

“ If you are looking for a peaceful family holiday escape, this is it! Comfortable and spacious accommodation with a welcoming open-plan family room which acts as living room, dining room and kitchen. The children can run around the huge lawns to their hearts' content while you soak up the stunning views of the mountains from the balcony of your bedroom or from the pool behind the house. Do spend time in Lucca - a lively and authentic town full of beautiful buildings, attractive shops and excellent restaurants. Classic Italy. Bikes are popular here: you can hire one and ride along the avenue which was laid out along the top of the ancient city walls in 1800; this is a perfect place for a stroll as well - there are great views of the city and surrounding countryside. If you fancy a day at the seaside you can drive to the Versilia coast (the seaside resort of Viareggio would be a good choice). And if you're here at the end of August, why not nip down the road to the medieval village of Barga - musicians come from all over the world to perform at the acclaimed Jazz Festival here. There's a full week of live entertainment in every corner and square of this enchanting hamlet. As you can imagine, this villa lets very quickly every year! ”
a peaceful retreat in beautiful surroundings
We were met by the owners who gave us a warm welcome and explained everything there is to know about the house. They also left us a bottle of prosecco and a freshly baked flan. The house was an oasis of calm, in fact we didn't want to go anywhere for the first few days as we were enjoying the peace and quiet! The grounds were immaculately maintained with regular visits from the gardener, and the swimming pool is cleaned weekly. Something to note is that the house is accessed up a steep winding road and we didn't realise quite how remote the house was, so walking to a restaurant is not really possible. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat in beautiful surroundings, then this is the place for you.
