Taking up an enviable position halfway between Siena and Florence, not only is Panzano in Chianti a charming Tuscan hilltop town in its own right, but it’s also the perfect base to explore the region. The centre of Panzano is relatively small, but in addition to the Church of Santa Maria, built in the remains of the castle, there are a number of restaurants and shops including one that is owned by the famous Dario Cecchini – butcher extraordinaire and celebrity, on a mission to preserve the local butcher tradition. Once you’ve spent time exploring the town and its lovely stone houses, explore the surrounding countryside dotted with iconic cypresses, ancient vineyards and nearby medieval towns including big-hitters Lucca, Siena and Florence. Look out for local events: Vino al Vino – a wine festival held in September and the Festa della Stagion Buona – a medieval procession with Renaissance costumes and plenty of food and drink.
