Sitting in the Tiber Valley, just south of the Umbrian capital, Perugia, is the hilltop town of Marsciano. Less well-known than some of its illustrious neighbours – Perugia, Orvieto, Todi and Spoleto, which are all within easy reach – it doesn’t attract such large crowds, making this a lovely town to walk around. Wandering through the historic centre, you’ll come across the lovely church with its stand-out clock face, many inviting bars, café terraces, gelaterias and lovely restaurants. There’s even a Brick and Terracotta museum in the Palazzo Pietromarchi – an interesting museum displaying a fantastic collection of earthenware. On a Monday morning be sure to visit the bustling market, and on a Saturday morning the delightful antiques market. At points around the town you’ll be greeted with spectacular views across Umbria’s fertile land dotted with ancient vineyards and olive groves. Walking around the countryside is a treat in itself, and maybe on your way, drop in to a local vineyard for a memorable glass of wine…
