Enjoying a hillside position surrounded by sunflower fields, cornfields and olive groves, Villa il Merlano is a quintessential Italian villa escape, located near the village of Marsciano in the rural heart of Umbria.
With terracotta floors and beamed ceilings, and styled in 'arte povera' with rich sunny colours, this is a country house with character, and typical of the region. There is a large rustic kitchen and fireplace, and other original features throughout the villa, alongside modern conveniences like air conditioning. The bedrooms have toulipier wood furnishings and the bedsteads are of wrought iron. For the comfort of guests, the swimming pool enjoys solar heating; there is also a Finnish sauna, a small gym, mountain bikes and outside Jacuzzi. Guests can also book a masseur for a relaxing treat (payable locally).
This region is rich in history and there are many places to visit. On your way to Perugia, which should not be missed, you may want to visit Deruta, famous for centuries for its top quality ceramics (maiolica), and also Torgiano, classed as one of Italyís most beautiful villages and proud of its DOCG status for its Torgiano Rosso Riserva wines. Other very appealing towns to see include medieval Todi, beautiful Assisi, or bustling Orvieto with its elegant shops, stunning cathedral and Etruscan heritage: park your car here then take the lift or the funicular railway 150m up to street level! You could then continue south west to spend the afternoon at beautiful Lake Bolsena, where you will find beaches, watersports and restaurants, or visit the unforgettable citadel of Bagnoregio, accessed on foot via a causeway. Rome and Florence are further afield, but still within easy day trip range.

“ An excellent base for a really relaxing holiday, right in the heart of Italy. The picturesque hill town of Todi is quite close at hand: if you are here in July, don't miss the spectacular two-week international ballooning competition. Later in the season (at the end of August) you have the major arts Festival which is held here every year. Just two miles from the villa is the little town of Marsciano, where you will find shops and some convenient local restaurants: try Citrus or L'Argine. Alternatively, why not just relax at the villa and enjoy the great views from the covered outdoor dining terrace and pool!
Overall we had a very good stay.
Overall we had a very good stay. Regarding the villa, the grounds were lovely and the pool particularly nice. The bathrooms were well fitted and the plumbing actually worked! Our greatest complaint would be the air conditioning which didnít work. The owner sent someone to fix it but it still didnít work properly. We managed just using the fan setting but that was annoying as it was very hot whilst we were there. The beds were uncomfortable. This could be rectified by using thicker, higher quality mattresses. The kitchen was rather gloomy and there wasnít really any adequate work surface to prepare food. Also there were few serving dishes for things like salads and the cups and glasses looked like they had got to the end of their season. The owner Nadia was lovely and very helpful when we contacted her. Marsciano is a bit of a nightmare to get around and the one way system tricky. It would be very helpful to have a map with the key places such as shops and restaurants marked on it. Your staff in the UK were very helpful and efficient. QUALITY VILLAS REPLY: The air conditioning has been repaired and the mattresses will be checked. The comments regarding the kitchen will also investigated and items replaced / improved on.
