Perched high above a tufa cliff in Italy's green heart stands the striking Umbrian town of Orvieto. The very first moment you set eyes on this lofty town, surrounded by fields of vines, olives and cypress trees, is mesmerising. And once inside, it doesn't disappoint. Medieval piazzas, churches, cobbled streets lined with boutique shops, chic cafes and fantastic restaurants are as inviting as the views. And then there's the Cathedral - a magnificent sight with its gothic facade, mass of mosaics, stained glass and sculpture. A highlight is the Chapel of San Brizio, featuring Luca Signorelli's wonderfully lit frescoes - an absolute must-see. For another must-see, visit the mystical underground world - a network of Etruscan caves, wells and tunnels dug out of the rock cliffs below the city. Guided tours show how these ancient Italians used to live, where stairs, cellars and galleries have been unearthed. It's believes these tunnels were meant for noble families to flee to in case of a siege. And finally, finish off with a glass of crisp, celebrated Orvieto white.
