Set in the awe-inspiring verdant hills and mountains of Umbria, San Giovanni del Pantano in the province of Perugia is a small pretty town with incredible views. Pantano, being the word for ‘marsh,’ goes back to the days when trains ran down the mountain, and that’s what you’ll see for miles around – grand, glorious mountains. In the town itself, there are a few sights to behold, such as the lovely church of St Agatha, home to frescoes pre-dating 10th century, an Etruscan tomb discovered in 1920 and the nearby magnificent Antognolla Castle, which is now a resort and golf course. But, it’s San Giovanni del Pantano’s natural surroundings that will enchant you. Perfect for hiking and cycling around, you’ll leave all your troubles behind. But, remember to try the local truffles and wine to revitalise you after all that exercise.
