Exclusive Salento farmhouse near the coast - Situated just a few miles away from the Adriatic coast and the splendid historic town of Otranto, Masseria del Fico is a fine example of a traditional Salento farmhouse surrounded by extensive olive groves and the typical Mediterranean flora. Sympathetically renovated and furnished in a minimalist contemporary style, this is a superb stone-built country property comprising three buildings traditionally arranged around a large courtyard.
The lavish use of Leccese stone creates a substantial appearance as well as maintaining a cool indoor temperature during the hot summer months. Many original features of the rural Apulian farmhouse have been skilfully integrated in the modern design such as vaulted ceilings, large fireplaces and even the conic roof of the charming trullo, now transformed into a stunning cutting-edge shower room. From the rooftop terrace there are wonderful views across acres of gently undulating olive groves as far as the eye can see, stretching to the horizon where this calming vista meets with an intense blue sky. This is Salento, an area of Puglia boasting an incredibly rich cultural heritage and unspoilt natural environment encompassing miles of uninterrupted coastline alternating fine sandy beaches, rocky cliffs and spectacular caves dating back to the prehistoric age. Many charming towns and fishing villages are just a few miles away from Masseria del Fico.
Once known as the ‘gateway to the Orient’, Otranto's original charm is undiminished. As you step beyond the main gate of the walled town, take a stroll along the narrow winding lanes lined with tiny crafts shops, pavement cafes and quaint osterie (i.e. typical Italian restaurants serving local specialities). The Aragonese Castle is at the very heart of the town affording one of the best views of Otranto's harbour and marina. A few steps away, the beautiful Cathedral features the most exotic floor mosaic in Puglia. The acclaimed beaches on the Alimini Lakes are just 12 minutes’ drive from Masseria del Fico and provide opportunities for water sports and hiking through the maritime pine woods. On the Adriatic coast you also find Santa Cesarea Terme and Castro Marina, both within 15 miles, with the stunning Grotta Zinzulusa. Further afield Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo and Santa Maria di Leuca would make perfect day trips from your elegant villa in Salento.

“ This property is absolutely wonderful. The traditional style of a Salento masseria has been completely respected, yet enhanced by a modern design. When you are here you feel like you are losing touch with time and space. Despite the proximity to Otranto and the coast, total relax and privacy are guaranteed in this splendid secluded corner of Salento. When you visit Otranto, you may want to try out one of these restaurants for your evening meals: L'Altro Baffo, Il Gambero or Atlantis, all equally good. During your holiday you must visit the splendid Baia dei Turchi within the Protected Natural Park of the Alimini Lakes. This is a secluded corner of unspoilt beauty you can only reach on foot. Legend has it that in the XV century the Turkish warriors landed here to attack Otranto.
