High above the natural harbour of Trapani, in the west of Sicily, sits the fantastic medieval town of Erice. Hidden under its own personal cloud, this wonderfully-intact Sicilian town has lots to offer. Notable sights include the Peopli Castle, and the Norman-built Venus Castle with a nice little shady park at the front, from which to enjoy panoramic views. Walking up to Erice is a delight. Steep lanes wind up and around from the Porta Trapani and there's a delightful sloping square, Piazza Umberto I, to enjoy a much-deserved coffee. But, rather than walk, the best way to get to Erice is surely to take the cable car (funivia) from the station just outside Porta Trapani. Fun for all the family, there are stunning views out to sea. Feeling hungry after reaching the dizzying heights of Erice? Head for one of the many pasticcerie and try the delicious almond biscuits and pastries in this lofty little medieval town.
